Aetherius Obscuritas
-Viziok
Intense black metal from Hungary. Aetherius Obscuritas
was originally a solo project of one Arkhorrl, but on
Viziok (Visions), the 'band' now features a drummer. The
music is relentless, powerful and filled with hatred.
The guitar riffs are blazing, sometimes veering into a
very technical and melodic thrash sound, but for the most
part staying on course with grim and brutal black metal
fury. The drums consist of relentlessly pounding blast
beats and the vocals feature a shrill, almost hissing
black metal growl in Hungarian and English. Great BM released
by Paragon Records, the label responsible for Black Crucifixion,
Skyforger, etc. |

Aluk Todolo
- s/t (debut)
Aluk Todolo plays Occult Rock. The band uses traditional
rock instruments and magickal theories to reach elevated
levels of psychedelic trance and new states of consciousness.
This 7" marks their debut debut and features two esoteric
compositions that are drawn from the bands improv-laden,
live rituals. Side A is a rhythmic and moody piece which
gradually builds intensity only to crescendo and gently
drift into a blur of sound and mysterious mumblings from
Aleister Crowley. The B-side is more krautrock-influenced
and upbeat, but fades into an ethereal drone only to explode
back into a heavy rock jam. |

Aluk Todolo
- Descension
The first full-length shows the band developing the esoteric
theorems established on it's debut 7" and going far deeper
in the methodical exploration of the occult powers of musical
trance. With the goal to create a timeless, organic mixing
of krautrock's strangeness and black metal's coldness, Aluk
Todolo conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic
guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre,
magick summonings. By reducing psychedelic improvisation
to a bare, telluric instrumentation, and basking in the
archaic rawness of lo-fi production, the trio elaborates
on an audio ritual meant to be monolithic and stabbing,
hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming. Vinyl
is UK Import from Riot Season. |

Artbreakhotel/Graham
Moore - split
Graham Moore (of the group Black Meat and the label Blossoming
Noise) has been performing and releasing some of the best
noise around these days. On this release, his own work
and label overlap, but humble Graham doesn't even put
his name on the outside of the CD. Before opening this,
you will assume that is it's not a split but in fact just
a solo outing from Nobuo Yamada's Artbreakhotel. Upon
opening we find a monster of a metal-clattering meets
electronics track from Yamada entitled "Frozen" and 3
tracks from Graham. Warning: "Chimp Sandwich part 1" is
very "belchy" in sound and may activate your gag reflex.
All good noise recordings should do this. |

Aufgehoben
- picture disc
Damn, ever since I heard Anno Fauve, I have been way
into England’s Aufgehoben. This is their debut 7" release,
brought to us courtesy of Pennsylvania’s White Denim.
These two tracks are from the same session as the Messidor
full-length, and are so over the top, there were apparently
issues getting the vinyl mastered. Highly recommended
and beautiful artwork as always, although it is hidden
inside a simple black sleeve! |

Aughra / Mosh
Patrol - Is There Anyone Else Outside?

bangos, but shimmering ambience. I can never say enough
how much I love Aughra and how more people need to get
into this project. Released by Brent's own, Magic Bullet

Baby Zizanie
- Domestic Landscapes #3: Thalassaphobia (Italian Import)
Baby Zizanie is a collaborative project which combines
the talents of J.G.Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus,
Manorexia, Wiseblood, DJ Otefsu etc) and Jim Coleman (ex-Cop
Shoot Cop, Phylr, Here). The music performed by JGT and
Coleman emanates from laptop computers and other electronic
devices, veering from disturbed sounds capes to seductive
rhythmic passages to body-mangled beats. An electronic
excursion into psychosis and seduction. Limited to 500
and almost out of print from the now defunct Italian label,
Nail. |

Bjerga/Iverson
- Cosmic Surgery
The insanely prolific Norwegian duo Sindre Bjerga and
Jan Iversen have released 30+ CD's and CDr's on various
labels over the years. This is their first for Minneapolis'
Housepig, Cosmic Surgery uses ‘amplified objects and electronix’
to produce a disturbing atmosphere of surveillance, paranoia
and desolate space. Like looking over your shoulder, seeing
nothing behind you, and still feeling uneasy… This cdr
comes housed in an envelope & insert hand-printed by Seattle
lino-block artist Nic Schmidt, and is limited to 100 copies. |

Bobcrane /
Lid Emba - We Substitute Radiance
Wow! Two awesome and ultra-underground musicians team
up for a mail/internet collaboration. Bloomington, IN's
Bobcrane (aka Ryan Huber, also of Olekranon and Vopat--
who will soon have a 3" on PG) and Atlanta, GA's Lid Emba
(aka glitch/percussionist extraordinaire, Sean Moore)
who wowed us with his 2006 debut, "Reason isn't Radar".
The result sounds like neither project, but like a strange,
art-damaged jam between Tangerine Dream, early 90's Residents,
and a dubbed-out electro-King Crimson. Heavy guitars,
fractured beats, pulsing bass and massive amounts of nob-twiddling
all collide for an amazing psyhedelic journey to a better
place. Pro CD in a gorgeous digipak jointly released by
Inam and Stickfigure. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. |

Burmese -
A Mere Shadow and Reminiscence of Humanity
We had the bulk of Burmese's discography in stock a few
years ago but it sold out. The band is no more, but this
album still rules, so we got a few more copies back in
stock. I believe our description of Burmese was something
to the affect of a half avant Jazz/half electro-improv
outfit being thrown down a flight of stairs. That description
still stands. Spazz-y in the best way possible. Brought
to us by Tumult. |

from Israeli noise/grindmasters, Cadaver Eyes. This sucker
fucking rules. Released by Israel's Heart and Crossbone
imprint. |

Burmese/Fistula
- split
An awesome split that brings together 2 different, yet
very complimentary bands. SF's Burmese contribute their
spastic noisecore that sounds like a half electronic/
half improv jazz outfit being thrown down the stairs.
Ohio's Fistula unfurl slow, Sabbath inspired, detuned,
crunchy guitars, thunderous bass lines, and throaty vocals.

of sound. Packaged in printed envelope with full color
6-page booklet. Limited to 300 copies from Housepig. |

Jim Coleman
- Domestic Landscapes #1 (Italian Import)
Jim Coleman is known to many as a 1/4 of the now defunct
NYC band, Cop Shoot Cop and his solo project, Phyler.
This, the first in a series which also included Rothko
and Baby Zizanie, is a great collection of "innovative
examples of pure neo-electro, post-experimentalism, not
of this world. Melodic soundscapes and backwards futuristic
pop for the year 3000". File under Electro, Breakbeat,
Ambient, IDM etc. The 6-track 12" was released by Italy's
Nail records and is limited to 500 copies. |

Cream Abdul
Babar / Teen Cthulu - split
These two tracks come from same sessions as the Kylesa
split. One is a rocker and one a bit of noise fuckery
from CAB's Tradd Sanderson (now known as Decimation Blvd.)
Teen Cthulu are gone but not forgotten as well. Their
blend of power and black metal with hardcore was spectacular.
And the packaging here is killer. Amazing artwork (again
provided by Tradd Sanderson) which ended up in a few design
competitions and the CD itself is a fan disc(you know
the 3 inches of CD with an inch of clear plastic around
the outside.) Very cool. Released by Hyperealist. |

Croatan Ensemble
- s/t (Greek Import)
Bill Kouligas(Family Battle Snake) and iason (ps stamps
back) met in a room after a night of too many drinks,
pink imperialism (huh?) and sadly, unfortunate encounters
with cops. It is therefore to their credit (being also
their first session together) that they produced almost
an hour of powerful noise and drones which comprise this
release. Released by 1000+1 Tilt!! |

Curver & Kimono
- All Music Recorded (Icelandic Import)
Iceland, the beautiful island that brought us the Sugarcubes,
Bjork, Sigur Ros, Mum, and the mighty Ghostdigital (which
is comprised of Einer Orn of the aforementioned Sugarcubes
and an amazing fellow named Curver Thorodsen.) If you
saw Ghostdigtial open for the Melvins a few years ago
in the US, you saw Curver mixing live musicians, dubbing
them in and out and creating amazing sounds from improvised
performances. Here, Curver teams up with Canadian/Icelandic
indie-postpunks, Kimono, for 11 dubbed-out, psychedelic
tracks filled with chilled-out drum rhythms, trippy electronics,
warped vocals, and general beauty that is pretty fucking
amazing. The influences of krautrock, 80's postpunk, and
so muchg more are hinted at within, but this is truly
an original work unlike anything out there these days.
Highly recommended and not widely available (if at all)
in the US. |
